Discipleship takes discipline — the work of straightening what is bent, retraining and strengthening our capacities, working loose the bonds that constrain us.
–Rebecca Konyndyk DeYoung, Glittering Vices
Discipleship… it’s not what we think…
It’s not about keeping a list… pursuing holiness through works… behavior modification by the power of our self-will… the keeping of rules… this is the work of the Pharisees… the ones Jesus called whitewashed tombs… sons of hell…
Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. …”
Luke 11:46 NIV
Discipleship… it’s about coming under the yoke of Jesus… working alongside Him… for the transformation of heart and soul… in the power of the Holy Spirit…
“… Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
Discipleship… yoke work… letting Jesus in… to do the work of transformation… purification… to prepare us for His Kingdom… His return… and revealing His Light… in a dark world…
Come… alongside…
Walk… with… Him…
Be… set… free…
This is discipleship…
Yoke… work…
Amen…
