sacred space…

For just a moment… I think about… creating a sacred space…

A place only filled with Him…

A sanctuary… where the things of the world are not allowed…

As soon as I begin to imagine what this place might look like… how I might create holy ground in my home… He puts all these thoughts to a halt…

Be in the world… but not of the world…

And the picture of my current… cluttered… sacred place… fills my mind…

The place I write… wrestle with Him… pray… is also the place I pay bills… balance the checkbook… take care of business…

It’s a corner of my laundry room… where the world’s mess… constantly creeps in…

Dirty clothes… the sink which does double-duty as the mop bucket… the cat’s litter box… food and water… also live in this space…

My books about Him… alongside projects undone… with materials for more still un-started…

A constant reminder of my finitude… the battle of flesh vs Spirit…

Be in the world… but not of the world…

And He impresses on me… You already have a sacred space where you meet with Me… you are right where I want you…

“…I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. …”

John 17:15-19 ESV

No matter what space we occupy in the world… the world will be there… because we are there…

We cannot create a sacred space apart from the things of the world… that’s His job…

For now… we are meant to be right in the middle of the mess… meeting Him there… where He and His people… are most needed…

In the world… but not of the world… the place we live… serve… worship… and grow… until He returns…
