O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
Psalm 63:1 NRSV
We all thirst… have a soul-desire to be filled… satisfied… comforted…
Yet few of us realize what it is our souls thirst for…
We fail to recognize we thirst for God… for deep relationship with our Creator… the One whom we communed with in Eden… the One who bridged the gap… and made Communion possible again… through the cross…
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. …”
John 6:35 ESV
Most of us… me included… first turn to the things of the world to settle our hearts… security through relationships… ideals… family… money… position… recognition… physical health… food… admiration… outer appearance… etc. …etc. …
But… all of these will fail… to satisfy the thirst in our soul…
They may fill for a moment… but the clean… quiet… orderly house doesn’t last long…
the satisfaction of a craving filled by chocolate… and/or buttery popcorn… quickly fades…
the buzz from the just-right chardonnay… turns to a headache…
the relationship… where you invested so much of yourself… fails to meet expectations… when worldviews collide… desires depart… opinions differ…
So many ways… we try to sate our thirst… but everything the world offers on its own… fails… to… fill…
Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the Lord, for my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 2:12-13 ESV
O… but rarely are we appalled by what we seek from the world… we simply move to the next thing… surely… it will satisfy…!
But God alone is the Fountain of Living Waters… the One True Source of what we need to satisfy our thirst…

Consider today… What leaky cisterns have you built…?
Where do you continue to run…? that’s not Him…?
It’s a universal thirst… He created us with… so we might seek and find Him…
He places us right where we need to be… in time… space… geography… to set us up… to find Him…
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “In him we live and move and have our being”…
Acts 17:26-28 ESV
He is the One for whom we thirst…
Ask for the faith… to be filled… to the full…
