the silence… of Saturday…

And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking [Jesus] down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

Mark 15:46 ESV

The One believed to be Messiah… Savior… Son of God… was silenced…

Crucified by His own people…

You know… the silence must have been deafening to His disciples… especially in light of the events the day before…

How did this happen…? We were so sure He was the One…? the One coming to save us…? set things right…?

How could we be so wrong…?

Despair… fear… doubt… deep… dark… disappointment… must have pounded in their hearts as the stone sealed His tomb…

Can you imagine…?

Maybe it’s hard for you to think about… connect with how they felt in that moment… because we are privy to what happens next…

And we celebrate it tomorrow…

But I think… you probably can imagine… if you think back on your life for a moment…

In your walk of faith… has God seemed silent to you…? at times…? or maybe even now…?

Has He gone underground… when things started to fall apart…?

when the beloved child derails their life… with a series of terrible… sin-full… choices…?

when the great job… turned into a lay-off…?

when the plans for the perfect day… vacation… celebration… vanished in the wake of a worldwide pandemic…?

Have you ever wondered if you’ve been a fool for believing…? because this God you thought you knew seems to have disappointed you…? abandoned you…? maybe even sabotaged you…?

Because when you believe in a Sovereign… Good… All-knowing… All-Powerful… God… for Whom nothing is impossible…? shouldn’t He intervene…? stop the bad stuff coming down the pike…?

I mean… Really…?!

Yes… we may be able to identify… with the silence… they faced…

No amount of miracles… teaching… or prophecy prepared them for this horribly unexpected turn…

Silence…

Dead… silence…

And we too… run into these moments at times…

But what we need to remember… is there is purpose… in the suffering… and subsequent silence…

Just because God is silent… seemingly absent… it does not mean He is not at work… it does not void His promises…

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah…

1Peter 3:18-19 ESV

Jesus… in the earthly silence… was preaching His gospel to those who missed it in the days of Noah… (and I’m sure to those before and after…)

Although His body was dead… His spirit was at work… bringing the offer of life to the formerly disobedient and dead…

Now there’s a thought…

Where could God’s Spirit be speaking life…? when He seems silent to us…?

We also must remember… we are called to live by faith… not by sight… (or sound…)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

Hebrews 11:1-2 NIV

The definition of faith has not changed… it is being sure of what you hope for… absolutely certain of what you do not see…

The ancients were commended for this… and they were on the far side of the resurrection…

When God seems deafeningly silent in our lives… remember the silence of Saturday…

Remember His promises… His teaching… His miracles… His resurrection…

He has not abandoned… He is at work…

Working to build your faith… that you might be as trusting as His Son…

He is the Way… the Truth… and the Life…

A way we cannot imagine on our own…

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.”

Isaiah 55:8-13 NIV

O… put your faith to work… in the silence…!
