keys…

key… noun… 1a: a usually metal instrument by which the bolt of a lock is turned b: any of various devises having the form or function of such a key 2a: a means of gaining or preventing entrance, possession, or control…

–Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary (11th Ed.)

The new vehicle has a “key fob”… I know they have been around a while… but this is my first…

Still haven’t quite figured out how to best use it…

Whether to just keep it in my bag… or on the console…?

For now it’s on a key ring with other traditional keys…

Yesterday… I parked my car to go into the shop… fob safely tucked in my bag… I locked the door… then realized… Oh… I need my keys out to unlock the shop door…

In that moment… the whole business of keys… and their significance… filled my thoughts…

We have keys to the things we own… the places where we have authority… or have been granted access to by another…

We get to choose… who or what comes in and goes out… and who else can have a key…

The keys to the Kingdom of Heaven come to mind…

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” –Jesus

Matthew 16:19 ESV

From the context of this verse… it’s clear the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven… are given to those who believe in… trust their lives to… Jesus…

It’s all about who you say Jesus is…

When we are gifted with faith… we are blessed with the keys

Keys to bind and loose… in heaven and on earth…

Keys to His peace and comfort… grace and mercy…

Keys to enter His presence… and life eternal…

But the picture which most impacted my thoughts in the moment… especially in the midst of traveling through this dark… hostile… world… was the security found in the Kingdom…

Jesus Himself… determines who gets the keys… and no evil… no darkness… no dis-ease… shall ever be allowed to even crack the door to His Kingdom…

…the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:18 ESV

Keys… a blessing… a comfort… a responsibility…

Amen…
