as long as it is day…

“… We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. …” –Jesus

John 9:4 ESV

I’ve felt it the last couple of days… as long as there’s daylight I feel energized to work…

Looking at the hours ahead… I consider just how much I can do…

But then… night begins to fall… sun lowers in the sky… darkness takes over… and my strength… energy… resolve… fade…

These words come to mind… As long as it is light… thinking it Scripture… I find I’m remembering it wrong…

The verse I thought I was thinking… really says… while it is day…

I check the definition for the Greek translated day… it reads… used of the natural day… or the interval between sunrise and sunset… as distinguished from and contrasted with night… (Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon)

So yes… it’s referring to light… the daylight hours of a day…

Then I look at the word translated night… metaphorically the time when work ceases… the time of death… (Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon)

Day… the time of life…

Night… the time of death…

And it resonates in my heart with thoughts of serving Him as long as I have life… while my flesh longs to do whatever I want to do…

Rest… eat… entertain my self…

But the Spirit says… As long as it is light… work… until it’s night…

There’s no more working for Him after night falls… after death steals the light from your eye… when your days are over…

Now… only now… while we have days on earth… do we have the opportunity to serve Him by faith…

Only now… while it is day…

Before… night… comes…

In a way… we live this out every 24 hours… rising each day… entering sleep every night…

A mini-resurrection and death everyday…

How will you serve Him… as long as it is day…?

But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
