When there are many words; sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:19 HCSB
Silence… a hard practice to pursue…
For several weeks… I’ve quietly challenged my self… to keep silence…
Since I read…
Words often make us forget that we are pilgrims called to invite others to join us on the journey. Peregrinatio est tacere. “To be silent keeps us pilgrims.”
–Henri J. M. Nouwen, The Way of the Heart
Too often words fly forth to glorify self… not with boasting… but with cutting sarcasm… witty wisecracks… “playful” put-downs…
Seeking silence… I tune into my daily words… my moment by moment… thought-less words…
In them… I find much sin… little pursuit of pilgrimage…
Divine words… pilgrim words… should be patient… kind… not boastful or arrogant… not rude or envious… not irritable or resentful…
Pilgrim words express joy in truth… not wrongdoing… they trust… hope… endure… without a hint of cynicism…
Listening to self… I hear more worldly than wise… more transgression than triumph…
I find myself grateful for His grace… and humbled by His mercies… which are new each day…
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
