a carol…

A Christmas carol came to mind last week… and returns again and again… in my quiet times…

One I only remember the first line to… and the melody…

O Holy Night…

I look up the lyrics to see what the Spirit wants me to know…

O holy night the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new glorious morn
Fall on your knees
O hear the angels’ voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine o night
O night divine

I read the lyrics… and I see why it’s not a very popular carol…

Even in the hymnal where I worship… it was not to be found…

As I’ve contemplated the lyrics over the last week… the carols playing on the radio or in the stores are conspicuously incongruent with the heart of Christmas…

White Christmas… Have a Holly Jolly Christmas… Deck the Halls… Jingle Bells… they do not reflect the truth of the season…

Joy is to be had for sure… but not until we fall on our knees… fully aware of our sin and error… fully aware of His grace…

Jesus came because He loves us… and hates sin…

His coming has no meaning… no joy… without understanding why He came…

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

1Peter 2:24 ESV

Consider spending time on your knees in anticipation of Christmas… in celebration of the day He came… to save you… me… and all the lost…
