How… much… longer…!?
The lament springs forth with tears on the way home from worship…
A lament of waiting…
This morning’s worship stirred afresh angst for things I’ve been waiting for a long… time… a couple of decades…
During the Sunday school hour a friend and I delved into the Psalms… where we read…
I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.
Psalm 40:1-2 NKJV
The words come to mind… the newly afreshed unmet desires feeling like that pit of miry clay…
Waited patiently… in the original language of the psalm is waited waited… the Hebrew word used twice implies patiently…
I read it as… I waited in the waiting… these words meaning wait do so with eager expectation… hope… while in a horrible pit… of miry clay… waiting hopefully in the wait…
In the waiting… I do feel stuck… nothing I can do to bring about the changes I’ve been waiting on… I’ve waited… in waiting…
And I hear Jesus’s words…
“O faithless twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you?…”
Matthew 17:17 ESV
How long…? He too felt the angst of waiting in waiting…
Ultimately His waiting endured the horrible pit of the cross… where He cried out… My God… My God… why have You forsaken me…?
But because of Him… I see what trust in His Father leads to…
I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth — praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.
Psalm 40:1-3 NKJV
A new song… praise…
I’ve seen and fear… and placed trust in Him…
So I’m confident… He hears my cry… How… much… longer…?! inclined His ear toward my heartfelt lament… and the day will come… when I am filled with yet another new song… with which to sing His praise…
What are you waiting and waiting for Him to lift you out of…?
Cry out to Him afresh… put your trust in Him… He hears… He cares… He is faithful…
