imagining…

Imagining gets me into trouble…

A well know researcher… Dr. Brene Brown… recognized how we are created for story…

When we have part of a story… we can’t help but fill in the blanks…

The problem is… we fill in the blanks with assumptions based on our own imagining… which are generally false…

This is how we get all steamed up when our spouse is late… we don’t know why… but we fill the story in with…

  • they forgot about our plans…
  • they’ve had a terrible accident…
  • they are involved with someone else…

Of course… none of our imaginings are true…

They walk in the door telling you they had a flat… but you’re already MAD… because they forgot to call… they made you sick with worry… and you’re stilled filled with questions about who kept them late…

We get in trouble when we fill in stories with lies… but we need the whole story so bad… we’re willing to make one up…

This is not a great thing for relationships… it leads to false expectations… and disappointment…

Really… it’s arrogant to think we know… part of our heart’s deceitfulness…

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:9 NIV

So I’m trying to learn to be OK with unknowns… unfinished stories… and OK with waiting…

Because my imagining… mainly leads to disappointment… over something which wasn’t real anyway…

Living in the unknown… at rest… is how we should wait on God…

Waiting for Him… to fill the story His way…

That is the way of peace…

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5 ESV

What unfinished stories have you been imagining lately…?

Trust Him with them…
