And every day he was teaching in the temple, but at night he went out and lodged on the mount called Olivet. And early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him.
Luke 22:37-38 ESV
Following the triumphal entry… Jesus spent His days in Jerusalem teaching in the temple…
But there were some who wanted to catch Him in His words…
Then the Pharisees went and plotted how they might entangle Him in His talk. And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men. Tell us, therefore, what do You think?…
Matthew 22:15-17 NKJV
And they asked Him about taxes… and they asked Him about marriage in the resurrection… and they asked Him what the greatest… most important… commandment was…
In all His answers… they found nothing to trap Him with… and then Jesus asked them a question…
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”
They said to Him, “The Son of David.”
He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool”‘? If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.
Matthew 22:41-46 NKJV
On this day of teaching… questioning… trying to Him trip up… the questions stopped…
Those who stopped questioning Him… had made up their mind… they couldn’t trap Him in His words… but they were determined to trap Him… they just had to find another way…
And I think about those who stop questioning Him… stop seeking Him in His Word… stop wrestling with Him… they have made up their mind… they don’t like His answers… their hearts are hard…
Because those who seek Him… long to know Him for who He is… are in His Word… questioning… wrestling… listening for His teaching…
It’s never a good sign… when the questions stop…
Where are you…? when it comes to questioning Him… engaging in His Word…? are you trying to trap Him…? or trying to understand Him…? or have you found His answers unpalatable… and just stopped questioning…?
He’s open to questions… He can handle them all… but be prepared to hear some truth… about Him… and yourself…
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them.
Psalm 145:18-19 ESV
